Designing “the best UX ever delivered in an Outlook add-in”

Background

To compete with Google and Salesforce, I was asked to lead the design of a new desktop and mobile CRM product using Outlook's add-in framework.

8 months later, Outlook Customer Manager launched in Nov 2016 to positive reviews and was featured in numerous publications including TechCrunch. Javier Soltero, VP of Outlook, stated that this was the best UX ever delivered in a Microsoft add-in.

Solution

After interviewing 8 salespeople in partnership with our UX research team, I designed a solution based on 4 main jobs-to-be-done that were uncovered.

  1. Reduce time-wasting activities like data entry

  2. Track my past conversations and files

  3. Help me manage multiple customers and deals

  4. Help me provide personalized service
